Community Directory

Houses of Worship.

Columbia has a street named Church Street, and it is lined with churches. This is a public directory of the congregations that meet inside the city — listed, not ranked, and open to anyone we have missed.

How this page works

A directory, not an endorsement.

The First Amendment protects the free exercise of religion, and it also keeps government out of the business of preferring one faith over another. So this page is a bulletin board and nothing more.

The city does not endorse, rank, recommend, or vouch for any congregation listed here. Every entry carries the same information in the same order, alphabetically. Any faith community that meets in Columbia is welcome on this page — if yours is not here, or a detail is wrong, send it to us and we will add or fix it.

We have deliberately left out service times. We could only confirm them for about a third of these congregations, and printing a partial list would make the rest look like an afterthought — and service times change. Call the congregation, or follow the link where there is one.

On the National Register

Church Street earned its name.

The Broad Street–Church Street Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 8, 2008. Several of the congregations below sit inside it, on a street that has carried the name long enough to become a matter of federal record.

A few of these congregations are older than most of the buildings downtown. First Baptist was organized in 1883, when a pastor from the rural Bunker Hill church and six believers met at the courthouse to start a Baptist church inside the city; they met at the courthouse, the Masonic hall, and the Methodist church before building on Dale Street in 1890. Columbia Presbyterian's commission was formed in April 1910. John the Baptist Missionary Baptist Church was founded in 1911. St. Stephen's Episcopal formed in 1954. Woodlawn began in 1953 in a rented storefront on High School Avenue.

Open to all

Add your house of worship.

This directory is open to every congregation and faith community that meets in Columbia, whatever its tradition. There is no fee and no application — send us the name, the address, a phone number, and a link if you have one, and we will add it. The same goes for corrections to anything above, and for congregations just outside the city limits that residents would want to find.
