Columbia is divided into four wards, each with its own alderman, plus one alderman elected at large who represents the whole city. Most people have no idea which ward they live in — and you need it to know who to call.

How the board works
Two people to call, not one.
Because Andrea Porter is elected at large, every resident of Columbia has two aldermen: the one for their ward, and her. If you cannot reach one, the other still represents you.
The Board of Aldermen meets at City Hall and meetings are open to the public. If you would rather see what the board has been doing before you call, there are plain-language recaps and the official minutes.

City or county?
Two governments, two sets of roads.
Columbia sits inside Marion County, and the two are separate governments with separate elected boards. Knowing which one owns your problem saves a phone call.
The city — water and sewer, household garbage, city streets, police, fire, permits, zoning inside the city limits. 601.736.8201.
The county — county roads and bridges, drainage and culverts, right-of-way mowing, solid waste outside the city limits, and the property tax rolls. Five supervisors, one per district, each elected to a four-year term.
