Welcome to the City of Columbia

“City of Charm on the River Pearl”

Columbia sits where Mississippi began — the state's fourth city, chartered on the banks of the Pearl in 1819, and for one remarkable year the capital of the whole state. Two centuries later, the copper dome still watches over Main Street, and the town under it keeps moving: state awards for downtown, tournament weekends at The Yards, a hay-bale maze taking over a downtown lot come fall.

A Main Street worth the name.

Columbia has been a designated Mississippi Main Street community since 1991 — and it shows. The North Main infrastructure project finished in January 2026 and won the state's Outstanding Public Improvement award. New venues are lighting up historic buildings, and facade grants are helping owners bring storefronts back to life.

Home plate for the whole town.

Six fields, covered seating, batting cages, and a bronze sculpture at the gate that tells the real story — two once-separate youth leagues, now one league for every kid in Columbia. Funded by the city's tourism tax and drawing tournament teams from as far as Texas and Oklahoma.

Growing Columbia

Business doesn't grow here by accident.

City Hall handles the permits and the paperwork. The Marion County Development Partnership handles the rest — site selection, business counseling, and the ribbon-cutting when you open. It's Columbia's chamber of commerce and economic development office, and its roots run back to the Commercial Club of Columbia in 1906, the second-oldest such organization in the state.
